Jonathan Bush: Republicans Are More Likely to Keep the Seat Against Platner

Maine Gubernatorial Candidate Jonathan Bush Discusses Political Landscape

Conservative businessman and gubernatorial candidate Jonathan Bush has expressed optimism about Maine Republicans’ chances in the upcoming Senate race against Democrat Graham Platner. During an appearance on a recent *Breitbart News Saturday* broadcast, Bush, who is related to former President George H.W. Bush, noted that Maine currently requires strong conservative leadership.

In a discussion with host Matthew Boyle, Bush commented on Governor Janet Mills’ recent decision to suspend her Senate campaign. He mentioned the pressing need for a gubernatorial candidate who can effectively represent conservative values in the state.

Reflecting on Platner, Bush remarked, “He’s a bit naive. He attended a private school but was expelled and ended up at another one, facing a string of failures.” He humorously noted Platner’s current job selling oysters, saying it was ironic that Platner, dressed as a Maine fisherman, wouldn’t be successful in that role while trying to influence U.S. policy. Bush stated he would be enthusiastic to run against him, indicating, “We’re fortunate to have Susan Collins and our current senator.” He emphasized the strong chances of winning his current position.

When discussing the perception of Mills in the gubernatorial race, particularly her influence and the “little apparatchik class” surrounding her, Bush described them as increasingly viewed as “toxic” by Maine residents.

“It’s interesting,” he said, “as the insiders connected to Mills’ administration seem to have varying roles and divergent access to funding for programs. Many Mainers see this group negatively, and I believe that’s a fair assessment.”

Bush also shared insights on the political climate, noting that recent polls suggest a shift as Republicans have been registering more voters in Maine compared to Democrats. “It’s an exciting time for us Republicans as we’re welcoming six new constituents for every Democrat,” he added.

He pointed out the troubling state expenditure, highlighting how Maine’s spending has dramatically doubled in a single administration, saying: “It took us centuries to hit six billion, but just eight years to reach twelve billion. Last session alone, we added another five hundred million. We even shifted our tax ranking from fifth to third highest in the nation.”

When asked about his political alignment, Bush labeled himself a “Maine guy,” stressing the importance of local business acumen in governance. He believes Maine’s capital needs leaders who are adept at managing operations at scale and not entrenched in a political machine.

He concluded with a touch of irony, stating, “It just so happens that this guy from Maine has the last name Bush.”
