Jose Andres, celebrity chef and founder of the nonprofit World Central Kitchen (WCK) commemorated the seven employees who were killed. He made the remarks during a service Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral during Gaza relief efforts.
“They risked everything to feed people they didn’t know and would never meet again,” he said, calling the workers the best of humanity. “Their example should inspire us to do better and be better.”
Seven aid workers were leaving a warehouse in Deirbara, central Gaza, after delivering food. They were driving through a “conflict zone” in two armored vehicles when the Israeli airstrike struck.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed responsibility for the unintentional attack, calling it a “tragic event” but also saying such things happen in war.
Andres gave a tearful speech at the celebration of life, praising each worker individually. He said “even one innocent life is too many”.
“Food can never be a weapon of war. Humanitarians can never be targeted because they are the best among us,” he said.

After the strike, President Biden called Andres to express his condolences. issued a statement He said he was “outraged” by the news of the deaths of workers, including dual U.S. and Canadian citizens.
