Reid and Morgan Engage in Heated Debate on Race and Cancellation
Joy Reid and Piers Morgan had an intense discussion on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” recently, focusing on Reid’s assertion that her departure from MSNBC was racially motivated. Morgan challenged her claim, suggesting that the show’s decline in ratings was the real reason behind the cancellation.
Reid’s MSNBC program, “The Reidout,” ended in February amid a broader network restructuring. The show struggled with viewership, recording an average of 973,000 viewers that month—a significant drop from 1.3 million in February 2024.
Reid argued that her show faced more cuts compared to other programs on MSNBC and expressed confusion over the cancellation decision.
During the exchange, when Morgan probed why Reid resorted to “playing the race card” instead of acknowledging the ratings issues, Reid replied, somewhat annoyed, that Morgan was attempting to shift the conversation to race.
“I appreciate your version of ‘playing the race card.’ It feels like you’re trying to pull the racial angle in this discussion,” she remarked before being interrupted.
In response, Morgan retorted that Reid had racialized more topics during her MSNBC run than any other host historically.
Reid’s broadcasts were often characterized by contentious, sometimes racially charged viewpoints.
She did not shy away from calling out figures like Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for his conservative stance, referring to him as “Uncle Clarence.” She also claimed that some of her critics, particularly white viewers, reacted negatively to her views as a “black woman.”
At one point, Reid asserted that Morgan had a double standard regarding discussions about race when it came to people of color.
The interview overall has sparked significant debate, particularly as it coincided with Morgan facing scrutiny over past controversial opinions expressed on social media.
