MSNBC host Joy Reid suggested Wednesday that President Biden’s recovery from COVID-19 is a “sign of strength,” similar to former President Trump’s survival of an assassination attempt.
“These are two elderly people. Donald Trump is elderly, and yet for some reason he was given nine seconds in the middle of a mass shooting to take an iconic photo. It’s a strange situation, but we’ll figure it out,” Reid said during MSNBC’s live coverage of the Republican National Convention.
Reid added that the media has portrayed Trump’s surviving the assassination attempt, appearing at the convention and then returning to the campaign trail so soon after as a “testament of strength.”

“The current president of the United States is 81 years old and has COVID. He should be recovered in a few days. I think that’s exactly the same thing. He’s strong enough. He’s older than Trump, but he’s been able to survive a disease that was once really deadly for someone his age. So if he recovers from COVID and comes back and is able to hold rallies, I think that’s exactly the same thing,” Reid said.
The White House announced Wednesday that Biden has contracted COVID-19 and is self-isolating in Delaware.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said the president had received “vaccination and a booster dose” and that his symptoms were mild.

Reade said Biden’s contraction of COVID-19 is an opportunity to demonstrate responsibility.
“It’s also a really interesting opportunity for President Biden to show responsibility. He’s going to wear a mask when he gets on Air Force One and he’s not going to spread COVID, but it’s also an opportunity to remind people of the hell we’ve been through with COVID because of Donald Trump,” Reid said. “This is a great messaging opportunity for President Biden to pull out the tapes and remind people how many people died. A million people who are no longer with us. People’s grandmas died alone with their iPads in their hands. It would be a great opportunity, a messaging opportunity, if the White House chooses to do this.”

In an Instagram thread, Reid questioned the nature of Trump’s injuries from the assassination attempt.
“I have so many questions! For example, where are the medical reports? What caused Trump’s injuries? What were his injuries? Shapenel?” [sic] Glass? Bullets? Where were the three attendees who were shot while sitting or standing close to Trump? Why was Trump allowed to stand and take photos or pump his fist while asking questions about his shoes, when the shooter could have just as easily been someone else? Reid wrote.
