Judge blocks Trump's 'anti-weaponization fund' agreement in harsh decision

Federal Judge Rejects Trump’s Anti-Weaponization Fund Settlement

A federal judge has issued a strong ruling against a settlement involving the Trump administration, which aimed to create an anti-weaponization fund. U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams stated on Monday that President Donald Trump had filed a lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) due to leaked tax documents.

Williams described the lawsuit as being intended “for the improper purpose of obtaining judicial legitimacy for a ‘settlement’ that has no viable basis in law or fact.” In a detailed 56-page decision, she noted that there was never a valid dispute between the parties involved.

The settlement, reached in May 2026, followed Trump’s decision to drop a $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS. He subsequently established a $1.776 billion fund, which critics argued would benefit his supporters and political allies.

“The facts before this court demonstrate,” Williams explained, “there was never any prejudice between the parties; there was never litigation or controversy, and there was never any question as to who would win.” She highlighted that Trump “improperly” leveraged control over the defendants to justify certain advantages, including access to taxpayer funds and immunity from audits.

The Justice Department, by agreeing to the settlement, has been criticized for allegedly abandoning its duty to protect the interests of the United States, according to the judge. Williams also pointed out that the settlement amount seemed more focused on branding than on thoughtful damages.

A representative for Trump’s legal team responded to the ruling, asserting that the IRS had allowed politically motivated employees to leak confidential information about Trump and his associates to various media outlets. They reiterated that Trump seeks to hold accountable those who have harmed America.

The ruling could complicate Attorney General Todd Blanche’s confirmation chances in the U.S. Senate as he is set to appear at a Congressional hearing on Thursday. Notably, Judge Williams was appointed by former President Barack Obama.
