Judge halts Adams' 'unlawful' proposal to eliminate Brooklyn's protected bike lane after e-biker injured a child

Judge Blocks Removal of Brooklyn Bike Lane

The situation is heating up for Mayor Adams. A Brooklyn judge has put a stop to the city’s plan to eliminate a troubled bike lane on Bedford Avenue.

Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Carolyn Walker Diallo stated that city officials “abused their discretion” in their decision-making process. The court ordered the bike lane to return to its previous state, restoring 1.5 miles of protected roadway.

The bike lane will remain unchanged until a court hearing scheduled for August.

Ben Farnas, the executive director of a transportation advocacy group, expressed relief, saying, “We are pleased that judges are currently blocking cities from making safety improvements less effective.” He added that they will persist in their fight for safer streets.

The ruling came shortly after a group of cycling advocates filed a lawsuit to halt the city’s sudden plan for removal, arguing it would lead to “more dangerous” conditions on the roads.

Walker Diallo’s decision pointed to violations by the Adams administration, claiming they acted “arbitrarily and whimsically” without consulting local officials or community members.

In contrast, the city maintains they considered feedback from the Williamsburg community when deciding to make changes to the bike lane.

City Hall stated, “After several dangerous incidents, many resulting in serious injuries, the Adams administration has heeded the community’s concerns and rethought the bike lanes while ensuring safety measures are in place.”

Recent incidents have raised alarms, particularly one involving a three-year-old girl who was injured by an e-biker. Video footage captured how the child darted into the biker’s path unexpectedly, although thankfully her injuries were minor.

Just a couple of weeks earlier, another child required hospitalization after being struck by a cyclist near a school bus at the intersection of Bedford Avenue and Myrtle Avenue.

Since 2024, there have been more than 53 reported injuries linked to bicycles, e-bikes, and scooters along Bedford Avenue, underscoring the ongoing concerns about safety in the area.
