Kamala Harris Discusses Social Media Algorithms
Former Vice President Kamala Harris recently used a metaphor involving yellow and pink flowers to illustrate how social media algorithms can continuously present users with similar content. She emphasized that these technologies have the power to shape our online experiences and, in turn, influence what we come across on various platforms.
This discussion took place during her appearance on “Off Air with Big Boy,” where the host brought up topics such as AI, TikTok, and Instagram, particularly regarding how personalized algorithms might impact American access to information leading up to the midterm elections.
“If you keep seeing the same thing over and over again, you should realize that you are being targeted,” Harris stated. She explained that once a user engages with certain content, algorithms will continue to push similar material, which she argued serves to limit exposure and understanding.
“It’s like, because I’m looking at this yellow flower, it suggests I have no interest in anything else,” Harris added, indicating how algorithms might underestimate human curiosity. “We need to be aware of how these algorithms manipulate our preferences and learn how to outsmart them,” she urged.
Her comments drew some backlash, including from Fox News hosts. For instance, Sean Hannity questioned Harris’ analogy and expressed confusion over her explanation. Meanwhile, Fox News host Jimmy Failla made a humorous remark suggesting that Harris misunderstands AI as something completely different.
As the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential elections, it’s uncertain whether Harris will run again in 2028. She has faced criticism regarding her past remarks about AI, including a statement from 2023 where she described AI in a rather simplistic manner.
Interestingly, these latest comments come after Harris urged President Trump to seek an international agreement, which includes China, to regulate the use of AI and set global standards for testing. Her ongoing discussions highlight the complex and often contentious nature of technology and its impact on society.
