Attempted Murder During Snorkel Trip in Hawaii

A man from Kansas faces serious charges after allegedly trying to kill a boat captain while on a snorkeling excursion in Hawaii, according to the local police.

Avery Nissen, a 21-year-old from Overland Park, Kansas, is suspected of stabbing a 62-year-old boat captain during a three-hour trip on Thursday. He has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, along with first-degree and second-degree assault.

The police identified the injured captain as Stanley Rulbicki, a well-experienced figure in the boating world. He incurred several stab wounds to his head and hands, plus a wound to his lower abdomen. Fortunately, he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.

Officers responded to the scene at Honokohau Harbor in Kailua-Kona around 3:21 p.m. on Thursday. Reports indicate that Nissen attacked the captain with a fillet knife, but other passengers managed to restrain him before further harm could be done. The motive behind this attack remains unclear.

According to sources, this incident unfolded on a catamaran operated by Hawaii Nautical. Mark Twill, the owner and president of the company, expressed gratitude that Rulbicki is recovering and acknowledged his bravery during the ordeal.

Twill remarked, “I’ve never heard of anything like this happening in our industry before,” and he commended the quick response and professionalism of his team.

Nissen’s bail has been set at $1.57 million, and he is expected to appear in court on Monday afternoon.
