Carmelo Anthony Files for Appeal, Claims Financial Hardship

Carmelo Anthony has announced he can’t afford to pay for legal representation as he seeks to appeal his murder conviction for the death of high school athlete Austin Metcalf. Reports indicate that Anthony has asked for a public defender, despite previous claims about being financially ruined.

Some sources noted that his family had recently purchased a new car and relocated to an affluent gated community after his bail was significantly lowered. This has raised eyebrows regarding the $625,000 in donations the Anthony family received from supporters during his trial.

Anthony was found guilty of murder and handed a 35-year sentence after he fatally stabbed Metcalf during an altercation at a track event in Frisco, Texas. His attorney, Mike Howard, announced plans to pursue an appeal, citing several key issues for the appellate court to examine.

“Following yesterday’s trial, we officially informed the court of Carmelo Anthony’s decision to appeal,” Howard explained. “It’s part of the legal process that affords every American the ability to challenge their conviction.”

The case has ignited a broader discourse about racism in the American justice system. Some assert that the conviction and sentencing were rightful consequences of Anthony’s violent actions, while others contend they reflect systemic racial biases.

Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett from Texas remarked that the Metcalf family might not fully grasp the ongoing struggles faced by Black mothers, emphasizing the constant fear and anguish they endure. “We must have a genuine conversation about race in our country, alongside discussions about personal safety,” she added.

In April 2025, after Anthony’s bail was reduced from $1 million to $250,000, media outlets reported that his family upgraded their living situation. Anthony argued that he felt threatened, mentioning that Metcalf had approached him before the stabbing, while officials confirmed that the knife he carried was not illegal in Texas.

Anthony will be eligible for parole after serving at least half of his sentence.
