Keaton Parks considered the possibility that he would never play soccer again before making his comeback.

Keaton Parks’ Road to Recovery

Keaton Parks recently shared that during his recovery from a surgery meant to fix blood flow issues in his right leg, he had moments of doubt—wondering if he would ever pitch again.

This marks Parks’ third procedure related to the same issue, with doctors mentioning that “no athlete has ever undergone this surgery three times.”

After a tough season last year, where he participated in only 14 games, Parks made his return to the field for NYCFC. He came off the bench in their season opener against the Los Angeles Galaxy, and soon started in the match against Philadelphia.

In that game, he played the entire 90 minutes as NYCFC secured a 2-1 victory over the Union, thanks to a last-minute goal from Tyvon Gray.

Parks focused on what he could manage during his recovery. “There were definitely those thoughts,” he admitted. “The hardest part of all this was figuring out if I could bounce back from this surgery.” He gave credit to the club’s medical team for their support. “Some days, I still wonder if I can keep doing this long-term. Right now, it’s out of my hands.” He mentioned that he’s doing all he can to stay healthy, concluding that if it doesn’t happen, well, it just doesn’t.

At 28, Parks first went under the knife in November 2021 to remove a blood clot from his right leg. He had a second surgery less than a year later in the summer of 2022.

Despite facing difficulties during pre-season and the early stages of the 2025 season due to a foot injury that turned out to be related to his circulation issue, he still managed a solid start with a goal and two assists.

While Parks is optimistic about his return, he acknowledges that his career could be at risk. “It’s a possibility that my career might be shorter,” he noted, adding, “but right now it’s all just speculation.” He continued, saying that they’re working on managing his health, and while setbacks present challenges, for now, things seem under control.

Parks’ return to the lineup has become crucial this season, especially with star player Alonso Martinez sidelined due to injury.

His skill in moving the ball and creating scoring opportunities will be vital as NYCFC looks for players to fill the void left by injuries.

In Sunday’s match, Parks created two chances and contributed five defensive efforts, marking NYCFC’s first win of the season.

NYCFC head coach Pascal Jansen expressed relief over Parks’ return. “It was great to see him back and contributing,” he said. “While he’s not at his peak yet, he needs time on the field to regain his form. Today felt like a good opportunity to utilize Keaton’s height and creativity.” He added that they’re happy to see him working hard to return to his former self.

In the match, Hannes Wolff scored NYCFC’s first goal in the 36th minute, though Philadelphia almost equalized with a shot from Indiana Vasilev late in the game. Gray’s dramatic header, however, sealed the win in stoppage time.
