Ken Dilianian Quickly Attributed Anger Toward ICE as a Factor in the Shooting of 2 National Guardsmen in DC

Shooting Incident Involving National Guard Members Near the White House

Ken Dilanian, a reporter for MS NOW, remarked on Wednesday that the recent shooting of two National Guard members a few blocks from the White House might stem from increasing public frustration aimed at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

During the Katie Toole Report, Dilanian noted that this anger could explain why these two West Virginia Guardsmen were targeted. He mentioned that “there’s not much the National Guard can do; they can’t arrest people.” It’s a complex situation, really. He added, “But, of course, there’s a lot of ongoing controversy in America about ICE wearing uniforms.” It’s interesting, though, how people might respond to those in uniform. I guess it’s about perception—some folks just might not connect well with that image.

Initially, West Virginia’s Republican Governor, Patrick Morrissey, claimed that the two Guardsmen were deceased, but he later walked back that statement after conflicting reports emerged. FBI Director Kash Patel later clarified in a press conference that the Guardsmen were indeed alive.

President Donald Trump confirmed on Truth Social that the Guardsmen were injured and in “grave condition.” He remarked, “The individual who shot and injured them is currently in two separate hospitals, and will face severe consequences.” Trump also expressed his support for the National Guard and law enforcement, emphasizing, “These are truly great people.” It’s clear he aims to rally support in times like these.

In August, President Trump had sent the National Guard to Washington, D.C., to help address rising crime rates. Although Mayor Muriel Bowser initially resisted this deployment, she later changed her stance in September, seeking cooperation from local police.

Some Democrats raised concerns about how the National Guard’s presence might affect ordinary citizens. For instance, Michigan State Senator Elissa Slotkin expressed worries about potential indiscriminate actions against Americans, while Illinois Governor JB Pritzker suggested that Guardsmen could prevent alleged disruptions during the 2026 elections. These discussions are obviously filled with varying viewpoints—kind of highlights how complex public sentiment can be regarding law enforcement and military presence in urban areas.
