Kennedy Center Honors Achieve Record Fundraising Under New Leadership
As President Donald Trump steps into his role as president of the Kennedy Center, the foundation recently celebrated a remarkable milestone. It raised an impressive $23 million during its 48th annual gala, a significant jump from the $12.7 million garnered last year when President Biden was in charge. This amount sets a new record for fundraising in the 48-year history of the Honors, which recognizes lifetime artistic achievements, as noted by the Kennedy Center.
In the past, honorees have visited the Oval Office, but this time, President Trump held the first-ever official awards ceremony there, personally introducing each recipient ahead of the gala set for Sunday night.
The Kennedy Center Director, Richard Grenell, shared with media outlets that this year’s fundraising nearly doubled from last year and emphasized how the Honors represent a premier celebration of the performing arts. Officials attribute part of this success to Trump’s expanded involvement, claiming that his engagement has sparked strong interest in the program.
Roma Dalavi, the vice president of communications at the Kennedy Center, remarked that this unprecedented amount demonstrates incredible donor enthusiasm. She expressed that the record donation is a sign of robust support for the institution’s mission and showcases its promising future.
During the Oval Office ceremony, which was a first for the honorees, President Trump introduced the 2025 recipients, stating, “It’s a great honor…I welcome you to the Oval Office.” He described this year’s class as “perhaps the most distinguished group” ever assembled.
This year’s awardees include: George Strait, members of KISS—Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss, Ace Frehley (posthumously)—Michael Crawford, Gloria Gaynor, and Sylvester Stallone. Trump praised each individual, calling Strait a “legend of country music,” and referring to Gaynor as the “queen of disco.”
Trump also unveiled a newly designed medallion for the Honors, crafted by Tiffany & Co. This medallion features a gold disc etched with the Kennedy Center logo, complemented by rainbow colors representing various artistic fields. The back displays each recipient’s name and the date of the ceremony, all hanging from a navy blue ribbon symbolizing dignity and tradition.
The formal recognition for the honorees is set to take place at a gala following a reception at the State Department. Trump noted that this hosting is a historic first, differentiating it from previous years.
This year’s honorees reflect significant cultural achievements over the last five decades. George Strait, renowned as the “King of Country Music,” boasts over 100 million certifications and has consistently maintained a Top 10 hit for over 30 years. Meanwhile, KISS has sold over 100 million albums globally, making them a notable fixture in rock music.
Michael Crawford is celebrated for his role in “The Phantom of the Opera,” while Gloria Gaynor has enjoyed a long-lasting, Grammy-winning career. Sylvester Stallone, an iconic actor and filmmaker, has profoundly influenced audiences through his roles in the “Rocky” and “Rambo” franchises.
The Kennedy Center, founded in 1971 as a living tribute to President John F. Kennedy, hosts more than 2,000 performances annually. The Honors began in 1978 and have become a pivotal event in Washington’s cultural scene.
President Trump highlighted ongoing renovations at the Kennedy Center, supported by Congressional funding aimed at improving acoustics and more. He remarked on the remarkable progress of the updates, asserting the quality of the sound as “great.” He added that if it sounds bad, fixing it post-construction is challenging.
The 48th Kennedy Center Honors will air on December 23 on CBS and will be available for streaming on Paramount+, allowing access for subscribers.
Officials indicate that the various events of the weekend, from the FIFA World Cup draw to the Oval Office ceremony and the celebration, indicate a new chapter under President Trump’s leadership, gearing up for a year of renovations and enhanced programs.
