Sen. John Kennedy Discusses Democratic Division After Government Shutdown

In a recent interview, Sen. John Kennedy (R-Louisiana) shared his views on the recent turmoil within the Democratic Party, following what was the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Kennedy pointed out that the shutdown might lead to significant internal conflict among Democrats, particularly affecting Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. He remarked, “Senator Schumer gambled and lost.” In a rather colorful expression, he suggested that Schumer appears as someone who has faced a major setback.

Kennedy framed the struggle within the party as one between what he described as the “Bolshevik” faction and more conservative figures like Schumer. He noted that while Schumer is aware of the more extreme elements in the party, he seems apprehensive about confronting them. Kennedy then identified Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as a leading voice of the party’s socialist wing, acknowledging her media prowess but questioning her policy effectiveness. “I’ve never heard anyone describe her as a policy maven,” he stated, suggesting that deeper scrutiny shows a lack of substantive ideas.

Proposing a fix to avoid future shutdowns, Kennedy suggested that members of Congress should not be compensated when the government is closed. He also mentioned a plan to keep Congress members within a 100-mile radius of Washington during such shutdowns to ensure they remain accountable. “That way,” he argued, “if there is a shutdown, it will be for a very short period of time.” His own experience reflected this, as he noted he hasn’t received pay during the recent shutdown.

The discussion also turned towards the filibuster, a recurring topic amid the ongoing situation. Kennedy explained that when he first arrived in the Senate, he wasn’t exactly fond of the filibuster, but he has since come to see its value as a means to block ineffective legislation. He recalled all the undesirable proposals that could have passed without it, underscoring its importance in legislative discussions.

In reaction to ongoing calls from some quarters, including former President Donald Trump, to utilize the “nuclear option” to override the filibuster, Kennedy reiterated his preference for keeping the current system while recognizing its complexities and challenges. It’s an ongoing debate, and, like many things in politics, it’s not as simple as it seems.
