Kentucky takes legal action against Roblox for ‘Charlie Kirk assassination simulators’ along with other child safety lawsuits

Kentucky Files Lawsuit Against Roblox

Kentucky has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, alleging that the gaming platform is not doing enough to safeguard children from potential predators and inappropriate content. The complaint, put forth by Attorney General Russell Coleman’s office, argues that Roblox effectively creates a “playground” for those looking to exploit minors.

As of August, Roblox boasts 111 million daily active users, a significant portion of whom are American children aged nine to twelve. The lawsuit asserts that the platform’s loose age verification processes allow child predators to easily create accounts and interact with young users.

In particular, the suit highlights alarming instances of “assassination simulators” related to Charlie Kirk, whose death occurred last month in Utah. It claims that even children as young as five were able to view graphic depictions connected to this incident, exposing them to violent content.

Prosecutors argue that Roblox has repeatedly failed to protect children from various forms of harmful material—violence, sexual content, and more.

“Roblox is designed to allow predators easy access to children and to use Roblox to groom and lure children from virtual contact to physical meetings, leading to harassment, kidnapping, trafficking, violence, and sexual assault of minors,” the attorney general stated.

During a press conference, Kentucky mother Courtney Norris shared her experience, revealing her misconception that Roblox was a safe environment for her children.

“I came to realize, later than I would like to admit, that it actually is the ‘Wild West’ of the internet, targeted at children,” she commented.

This lawsuit adds to a growing list of similar legal actions against Roblox. For example, Louisiana has also taken legal steps, citing concerns about protecting minors from sexual predators. An Iowa family has alleged that Roblox facilitated the grooming of their daughter, who faced severe abuse, while a mother from North Carolina is suing for the exploitation of her daughter in exchange for the platform’s in-game currency, Robux.

Roblox, in response, maintains that it has implemented comprehensive safety measures, claiming there are thousands of moderators working around the clock to manage content. They acknowledged the system isn’t infallible and emphasized ongoing efforts to enhance safety.
