Ketanji Brown Jackson Incorporates Gen Z Language in Birthright Citizenship Ruling

Supreme Court Justice Uses Gen Z Slang in Birthright Citizenship Case

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson made waves Tuesday by incorporating Gen Z slang into her concurring opinion on a significant birthright citizenship case. She referenced the phrase “I understand the mission,” which resonates with many young social media users, while criticizing Justice Clarence Thomas’ dissent.

This ruling, which was passed with a 6-3 vote, upheld the idea that individuals born on U.S. soil automatically receive citizenship. “After the Civil War, those supporting the 14th Amendment fully grasped that mandate,” Jackson noted. In her words, their actions employed “language that transcended race and geography,” effectively expanding the definition of freedom for everyone in America.

Jackson emphasized that the citizenship clause embodies a more universal perspective, contrasting it with the limited solutions proposed in the dissenting opinion.

As a nominee of former President Joe Biden, Jackson joined Justices John Roberts, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Amy Coney Barrett in this decision.

In past cases, Justice Jackson has often brought a unique flavor to her opinions, reflecting her personal style. For example, in a 2025 ruling over Trump v. CASA, she articulated a dissent where the court ruled against nationwide injunctions. In that opinion, she suggested that government overreach was primarily from the executive branch, not local courts.

Jackson acknowledged concerns from her colleagues but maintained, “In this clash over the powers of two branches of government, what the majority sees as a power grab isn’t about a lawless executive—it’s the local court that’s the power-hungry actor.”

In that case, she was part of the minority, aligning with Justices Sotomayor and Kagan.
