Teen Arrested in Connection with Penn State Student’s Murder, Second Suspect Still at Large

U.S. Marshals have announced the apprehension of a 16-year-old from Colorado linked to the murder of Billy Schmidt, a Penn State student. Philadelphia police confirmed that two teenage boys, both 16, will face adult charges regarding the robbery and shooting that occurred on June 6. The other suspect, Kaiseem Smith, is currently a fugitive and is wanted by authorities.

In a related development, 19-year-old Kadi Fleming is also a suspect in the theft of an off-duty police officer’s vehicle in Philadelphia. Schmidt, 22, was tragically shot during an attempted armed robbery around 1:30 a.m. on June 6. Authorities found him with a gunshot wound to the chest, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after.

According to police reports, an officer in the vicinity spotted a red Lexus without headlights being followed by a dark SUV, and shortly thereafter, two men were seen running toward the Lexus before gunfire erupted. The suspects allegedly stole a green Dodge Charger belonging to the off-duty officer, and gunfire was reported shortly thereafter.

Fleming is considered a person of interest in the murder of Schmidt, who was returning home from watching the NBA Finals with friends when he was confronted and robbed. Surveillance footage captured Schmidt chasing the robber, demanding the return of his phone just moments before he was shot.

Investigators have indicated that Fleming’s younger brother, also 16, was arrested in Colorado in June, along with a second teenager who turned himself in. Schmidt, who was studying journalism at Penn State World Campus, was set to graduate in December.
