Historic Visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla to Vatican City

King Charles III and Queen Camilla have made their way to Italy, marking a significant moment in royal history. This visit is notable as it’s the first time in 5,000 years that a British monarch will publicly pray with a pope since the Reformation.

On October 23, 2025, the royal couple visited Vatican City, meeting with Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic Palace. This encounter was particularly historic since it was the first meeting of a British monarch with a newly elected pope since Leo’s election in May 2025.

Royal expert Ian Pelham Turner noted the importance of the prayer meeting between King Charles, Queen Camilla, and Pope Leo, emphasizing the rarity of such a ceremony in centuries. He explained that as the supreme governor of the Church of England, King Charles has been eager to foster connections with other faiths.

During the visit, Queen Camilla radiated elegance in a cream coat dress adorned with delicate embroidery, complemented by matching accessories. King Charles wore a blue suit paired with a light blue tie, and they were joined by a cardinal dressed in traditional clerical attire, who seemed to guide them through their visit.

Despite ongoing challenges involving Prince Andrew, the couple appeared composed and united as they engaged in this symbolic journey to the Vatican.

Expert Hilary Fordwich expressed disappointment that the occasion, which could have been monumental for uniting Catholics and Protestants after five centuries, has been overshadowed by the controversies surrounding Prince Andrew’s past associations, particularly with Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew has since announced he will relinquish his royal titles amid continued scrutiny.

Turner added that King Charles feels frustrated that the media will likely focus more on Prince Andrew’s issues rather than the significance of the visit. Historically, Britain’s struggles between Catholics and Protestants are long-standing, reminiscent of past monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth, who were discouraged from praying with popes.

During the visit, King Charles donned a navy suit, while Pope Leo XIV was dressed in his traditional papal attire. The two were seen shaking hands and sharing prayers in the Sistine Chapel, a site rich with historical significance.

In the courtyard of San Damaso, the trio was framed by Swiss Guards and dignitaries, signifying the ceremonial aspect of their departure from the Papal Palace. Queen Camilla was also seen wearing a traditional black ensemble fitted with a lace veil during their audience with the pope.

Throughout their stay in Rome for the Catholic Church’s Jubilee celebrations, the royal couple participated in a prayer service in the Sistine Chapel, underscoring the event’s historical resonance, being the first joint prayer service of its kind in centuries.

The visit commenced as they touched down in Rome, greeted at the airport and later visiting the official residence of the British ambassador. Buckingham Palace noted the significance of this visit in bridging the gap between the Catholic Church and the Church of England, both crucial in recognizing collaborative efforts towards ecumenism.
