Kirk Herbstreit and Danny Kanell Criticize Youth Baseball Player for Viral Home Run Celebration

Debate Erupts Over Youth Baseball Celebrations

A recent viral video has sparked discussion about youth baseball celebrations, showcasing a young player—likely around 12 years old—who joyfully pummeled his bat into the ground and pounded his chest while rounding the bases. Remarkably, the camera captured him leaping to dunk a basketball into a hoop, much to the delight of his teammates.

This exuberant display, endorsed by his entire dugout and coaches, drew criticism from former Florida State quarterback and radio host Danny Kanell. Kanell placed the blame squarely on the parents and coaches, suggesting their roles in ignoring appropriate sportsmanship.

“The issue lies with the coaches and parents who condone this behavior. Instead of guiding kids to respect the game and their opponents, they’re focused on garnering attention. It’s quite embarrassing,” Kanell remarked.

Kirk Herbstreit, the chief college football analyst for ESPN, echoed Kanell’s concerns in his commentary on the video.

“How can we celebrate this?! What is wrong with people? Where are the coaches and referees? No sensible parent would let their child act this way on the field. It’s pathetic!” he exclaimed.

However, not everyone shared this viewpoint. One commenter on X argued, “Let your kids celebrate, Boomer. Your generation ruined sports with participation trophies, and now you complain when kids show enthusiasm. It’s ridiculous.” Another user mused about the appropriateness of celebrations in soccer compared to baseball.

Another comment reflected on how criticism of youthful exuberance might contribute to declining participation in youth sports and the overall challenges faced by Major League Baseball today. “This isn’t the age of Babe Ruth. I’ve heard these same complaints over touchdowns and celebrations—what outdated unwritten rules are you holding on to?”

On the other side of the debate, some showed support for Kanell and Herbstreit. One X user recounted their own experience: “My dad would have disowned me if I didn’t sprint after hitting a grounder. There was a time he didn’t speak to me for a week.” This highlights a generational divide in attitudes toward sportsmanship and self-expression in youth sports.

Baseball has certainly seen a rise in players expressing their energy on the field—but it seems some believe there should still be certain restrictions.
