Steve Cohen: Reason a fan holding a 'Fire Stearns' sign was removed from Citi Field

Mets Fans’ Expressions Mustn’t Spoil Game Day Experience

Mets fans are free to voice their opinions about David Stearns, but not at the expense of others’ enjoyment at the game.

Owner Steve Cohen recently recounted a moment that gained attention when a fan was ejected from Citi Field for displaying a “Fire Stearns” sign. While some fans expressed their discontent, Cohen appeared unfazed.

“I understand that people want to express themselves, and I totally support that,” Cohen shared on “The Show” podcast with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman. “However, when fans start saying that their day at the ballpark is being ruined, that’s where I draw the line. Sure, you can express yourself, but not if it impacts others’ experiences negatively.”

Security had to intervene as a Mets fan was ejected for holding up a “Sterns Out” sign, prompting chants of “Fire Stearns” from nearby supporters.

Mets officials indicated that stadium staff had previously asked fans to maintain a respectful atmosphere.

“The individual might have been causing a disturbance,” Cohen noted. “They were requested to show more respect. I wasn’t there, so I can’t say for certain what transpired. But the idea that expressing yourself is being hindered? That’s just ridiculous. Feel free to chant anything—from ‘Pete Alonso’ to whatever else.”

“But if you’re making it impossible for someone to enjoy the game behind you, that’s certainly not acceptable.”

Cohen also dismissed claims that his Mets organization lacks a fan-friendly approach.

In a broader discussion, Cohen clarified that Stearns’ position is secure, along with sharing insights on the team’s current struggles. The Mets are currently sitting at the bottom of the National League East with a record of 36 wins to 50 losses.

With the July trade deadline approaching, changes are anticipated, especially after the recent dismissal of manager Carlos Mendoza as the team faces ongoing difficulties.
