Gascón lost to Nathan Hockman, a former tax attorney who turned Republican to independent.

In 2020, the controversial district attorney promised to reverse the county's history of shutting down law enforcement.

During his term, he ended cash bail, declined to seek the death penalty, and ended the use of sentencing enhancements, positions that have been partially reversed over time.

His policies were controversial, as Los Angeles residents tried to recall him twice, but both failed to be on the ballot.

Hochman won the support of the local police union, even though Gascón is a former Los Angeles police officer.

He also received support from victim advocacy groups, former District Attorney Jackie Lacey, whom Gascón defeated in 2020, and more than 70 current and former county elected officials.

According to LAist“It makes crime illegal again,” Hochman said.

He also vowed to allow prosecutors to seek the death penalty again in certain cases.
