LA mayor Bass expresses concern that ICE raids will result in a lack of childcare providers.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed her concerns in a conversation with Katie Couric on Tuesday, stating that the effects of the Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations would soon be noticeable to the public.

In light of recent riots in Los Angeles, Bass has been vocal about blaming former President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement strategies for heightening fears within the community. She believes this approach has contributed to the rise of anti-ICE protests, which unfortunately have turned violent and led to vandalism.

During her interview on Couric’s YouTube channel, Bass shared that she fears illegal immigrants might be too scared to pursue work or could get arrested. It’s a troubling reality that weighs heavily on her mind.

“My biggest fear is the impact that all Angelenos begin to feel when immigrant labor is lacking,” she said. “We notice it in construction, hospitality, and even at grocery stores. People are starting to see it.” She added, “Think about mothers who rely on nannies or housekeepers. They feel it when no one is around to care for their children or take them to school.”

Bass mentioned concerns she heard from local grocery store owners who reported empty shelves. She pointed out that the situation has created unnecessary stress for families, particularly parents who hesitate to go to work or send their children to school due to fear.

“It creates confusion for families—parents are uncertain about going to work and whether it’s safe to send their kids to school. There’s an overwhelming pressure and tension. You can imagine the mental health impact on children, especially those who remember the previous Trump administration or the pandemic,” she reflected.

Despite Bass’s criticisms, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced it will persist with its efforts to apprehend undocumented immigrants engaged in criminal activities. In a direct statement, a DHS official commented, “Commander Noem has a message to the rioters: You won’t deter us. ICE will continue to enforce the law and apprehend illegal criminals.”
