American Economic Association Bans Larry Summers Over Epstein Ties

In a significant decision, the American Economic Association (AEA) has opted to permanently expel former Harvard University president Larry Summers, citing his connections to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, whose reputation has been tarnished by numerous scandals.

The AEA, which is comprised of some of the country’s top scholars, government leaders, and business figures, made this announcement on their website recently. Their statement confirmed that they have accepted Summers’ resignation and have, as per their established policies, banned him from membership. This ban also extends to participation in AEA-sponsored events or activities, including roles as an editor or reviewer for the association’s journals.

“The AEA condemns Mr. Summers’ conduct, as reflected in the published correspondence, as fundamentally inconsistent with the AEA’s standards of professional integrity and trust in leadership in the economics profession,” the statement articulated.

This decision follows the release of emails revealing a close association between Summers and Epstein. Harvard University itself is under scrutiny regarding its past connections with Epstein, including the financial contributions he made and his visits to the campus.

Summers, who served as Harvard’s president from 2001 to 2006, has faced criticism for maintaining a relationship with Epstein even after Epstein’s 2008 conviction on charges related to sex offenses.

One particularly telling email shared recently showed Epstein describing himself as Summers’ “wingman,” further complicating Summers’ public image. Following this revelation, Summers stepped down from several advisory roles, including positions at OpenAI and the Center for American Progress.

As scrutiny grew, especially after a video capturing a student questioning Summers about his ties to Epstein went viral, Summers experienced consistent pressure. Students expressed their frustrations over his responses, leading to protests and heightened criticism of his handling of the matter.

Efforts to reach out to both the American Economic Association and Larry Summers for additional comments have been made.
