Lakers Win Against Rockets, LeBron’s Role Under Discussion
On Monday night, the Los Angeles Lakers managed to edge past the Houston Rockets with a score of 100-92, thanks in large part to star point guard Luka Doncic, who netted 36 points. This victory marked the Lakers’ sixth consecutive win.
Blaze TV host Jason Whitlock suggests that LeBron James might be coming to terms with a shift in his role on the team. He observed that James appeared to be quite comfortable as the “third wheel,” a sentiment echoed by head coach J.J. Redick, who referred to James as the team’s “third option.”
Whitlock has long maintained that James’ position could hinder the team’s overall success. With James adopting a more supportive role, could this be the key for the Lakers to truly compete?
In a recent episode of “Fearless,” Whitlock and his guests—Jay Skapinac, Dre Baldwin, and Steve Kim—discussed the Lakers’ future prospects.
“Charles Barkley might disagree with you, but could the Lakers actually pose a serious threat when the postseason comes around?” Whitlock posed to his panel.
Baldwin described the situation as somewhat nuanced. “I would say they have potential, primarily because of Luka Doncic’s talent. With Reeves and LeBron still acting as a solid third option… if he’s alright with that role,” he mentioned, “then yes, they can be a threat. However, can they win and advance out of the West? I don’t think so. They can score, but defensively, they’re lacking.”
Kim seemed more optimistic but noted the necessity of balancing individual and team performance. “Playing in a structured manner is crucial, and that’s going to test both JJ Redick and LeBron,” he stated.
Skapinac expressed cautious optimism as well. “LeBron has been really holding back his ego lately. The question is, can he maintain that for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs? I’m not convinced,” he added.
However, even if James manages to keep his ego in check, there are low expectations for the Lakers in terms of championship contention. Skapinac predicts, “It’s ambitious to think they’ll get past the first round. They might land somewhere between third and sixth.”
