A closer look at the ‘aortic dissection’ that killed Sen. Lindsey Graham
According to Dr. Mark Siegel, a senior medical analyst, Sen. Lindsey Graham’s preliminary cause of death has been identified as a ruptured aorta stemming from cardiovascular disease. Siegel plans to elaborate on aortic dissection, a rare medical condition, and delve into associated risk factors like high blood pressure and plaque buildup. He emphasizes the importance of preventive health measures and regular check-ups, highlighting that Graham would want others to take their health seriously.
Furthermore, details have emerged about Graham’s final moments. Alabama Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville shared that a former staff member reached out for medical help after the senator called expressing heart-related discomfort. Tuberville recounted a conversation where Graham said, “Listen, my heart hurts.” He urged Graham to call 911, to which Graham replied he hadn’t done so yet.
It’s reported that Graham declined medical assistance just before making a scheduled television appearance. He apparently had expressed a desire to see a doctor only after this appearance. “I can’t die now. I still need to implement sanctions on Russia,” Graham told an anonymous source during one of their last discussions.
His office announced that Graham passed away due to “aortic dissection from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.” Aortic dissection involves a tear in the aorta’s inner wall, making it a life-threatening emergency.
Tuberville reflected on Graham’s dedication, remarking that Graham devoted himself to his work, lacking a family to come home to. “If we had a few days off, he would go to the airport and travel somewhere to serve our country,” he said.
Graham’s unexpected passing sent shockwaves through the Senate, prompting an outpouring of emotional tributes, particularly as senators returned to Washington for the first time since the Independence Day recess.
In touching words, Senate Majority Leader John Thune remarked on Graham’s absence, saying, “The Senate chamber already feels empty without him.” He added that he looked forward to a future reunion. Graham’s legacy continues as his sister, Darling Graham Nordon, has been appointed to temporarily fill his Senate seat, with plans to be sworn in soon. She expressed a heartfelt sentiment, stating her intention to honor her brother through her service.
