London counterterror police investigate suspected arsons at synagogues connected to Iran

Investigation into Arson Attacks on Jewish Institutions in London

British counterterrorism authorities are looking into possible links between suspected Iranian proxies and a series of arson attacks on Jewish establishments in London. This follows warnings from the chief rabbi that such violence is on the rise.

The Metropolitan Police have stationed specialized counter-terrorism teams to examine fires that occurred at synagogues, Jewish organizations, and a media outlet critical of the Iranian government.

The most recent incident took place on Saturday night, causing minor damage to a synagogue in North London. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and all fires happened within a close radius of one another.

Assistant Secretary of State Vicky Evans noted that investigators are exploring claims made by a group named Harakat Ahab al-Yamin al-Islam, which translates to “Right-wing Brotherhood Islamic Movement.” The group has asserted responsibility for several attacks.

Evans commented, “We’re aware of reports suggesting this group may have connections to Iran. Naturally, we will keep investigating those claims as we move forward.” She has previously mentioned the Iranian regime’s utilization of criminal agents and is assessing whether this tactic is being applied in London.

In addition, this group—which Israel identifies as a potential Iranian proxy—has also claimed to have attacked synagogues in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Recently, police increased their presence in Northwest London due to a string of incidents, including the firebombing of four ambulances for Jewish charities in Golders Green on March 23.

Several individuals, aged from their teens to their 40s, have already been arrested and charged in connection with these events.

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis expressed concern via social media, stating that “the ongoing campaign of violence and intimidation against Britain’s Jewish community is gaining momentum.” He acknowledged the close call of not losing lives but emphasized the urgency of addressing this dangerous moment for society as a whole.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer denounced the attacks as “abhorrent,” pledging that those responsible “will be found and brought to justice.”

The threats escalated further when the group released a video stating intentions to target the Israeli embassy in London with drones carrying harmful materials. Although police investigated a suspicious object in Kensington Gardens, they found no dangerous items.

British officials have long cautioned about Iran’s involvement in using criminal networks across Europe. MI5 has reportedly halted over 20 Iran-related plots in the past year.

Authorities have delivered a direct message to the “hired thugs” behind such attacks. Deputy Chief Matt Jewkes remarked, “This is a game. Those currently serving long prison sentences have learned this, and the same fate awaits those responsible for the recent crimes.”

Investigators continue their work to determine if the attacks are part of a coordinated foreign-backed effort.
