A Los Angeles dessert shop that has been open for more than 30 years announced its sudden closure this week, citing increased costs of doing business in California.
Sweet Lady Jane, known for its triple berry cake, announced on its website Sunday that it would be closing all of its stores. The bakery said its last day of business will be December 31, 2023.

“We did not make this decision lightly or quickly,” a message posted on the bakery's website said. “While our customer support and loyalty is strong, sales are not enough to continue operating in California, to pay down our lease obligations and provide our valued employees with a living wage without passing those costs directly to our customers.” You can pay.”

The business operated eight stores throughout the Los Angeles area, including stores in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Calabasas.
The chain had plans to open stores in the Los Angeles suburbs of Larchmont and Marina del Rey, according to its website. Sweet Lady Jane employed up to 200 people, according to LinkedIn.

Minimum wage workers in California earn $16 an hour, but some cities require employers to pay a higher minimum wage. Many fast food workers in the state will be paid $20 an hour in April.
