Los Angeles Times editorial board will not endorse Kamala Harris after decades of endorsing Democrats for president

The Los Angeles Times editorial board, which has supported Democrats for two decades, will not endorse anyone in the presidential election.

The editorial board listed other supporters and said, “It is no exaggeration to say that this may be the most important election in a generation,” but ignored the presidential election.

The Los Angeles Times endorsed Harris when she ran for California attorney general in 2014 and for the U.S. Senate in 2016.

While some on social media saw this as a sign of former President Donald Trump's popularity, Semaphore's Max Tani reports: claimed It was imposed on the editorial board by the paper's billionaire owner, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong.

A Times spokeswoman declined to comment for this story.

“We do not comment on internal discussions or decisions regarding editorials or endorsements,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Semaphore reported that Soon-Shiong, who became wealthy in the medical industry, also ignored comments from the paper's leadership about supporting Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts) in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary. Although it was a primary, he supported then-candidate Joe Biden in the general election.

The LA Times approved Harris ran for California attorney general in 2014 and for the U.S. Senate in 2016.

Some on the left posted images of their subscriptions being canceled over the decision.

“Absent in every election. The Los Angeles Times' decision not to support this year's presidential election made my decision to cancel my subscription a no-brainer. They are cowards.” [sic] They are horrified by President Trump's threat that “enemies will be punished.'' Miserable, weak, pathetic.” answered Attorney Sean Nyberg.

Prior to 2008, the paper refused to endorse presidential candidates, citing internal disagreements over the Watergate scandal in the 1970s. Prior to that, the paper had supported the Republican Party for nearly a century, starting in 1881.
