Luka Doncic discusses Lakers’ offseason statement with LeBron James

Luka Doncic discusses Lakers' offseason statement with LeBron James

Lakers Face Uncertainty After Playoff Sweep

The Lakers find themselves in a complicated situation. After being swept by the Thunder in the second round of the NBA Playoffs for the 2025-26 season, the team is left questioning its future. Star forward LeBron James is currently an unrestricted free agent, and standout guard Austin Reeves is likely to opt-out of his player option but might strike a new deal with the Lakers before free agency kicks off on July 1.

There’s a lingering question about LeBron’s next move: stay with the Lakers, pursue opportunities elsewhere, or even retire. The Lakers haven’t seen playoff action since Luka Doncic joined their ranks, yet there’s a compelling argument suggesting that the Lakers might still provide the best platform for LeBron to succeed, especially considering his strong rapport with Doncic both on and off the court.

Regarding Doncic, he remains with the Lakers for two more seasons and has returned to Slovenia this offseason to spend time with family. His recent interview attracted attention when he discussed his interactions with LeBron.

When asked if he had ever played golf one-on-one with LeBron, Doncic responded, “I played once or twice.” This moment was captured in a Slovenian news interview and quickly circulated on social media after being translated into English.

Interviewer: “What impresses you about golf? I’ve seen you post a lot. And LeBron. Have you ever played with each other?”

Doncic: “We’ve played once or twice. It’s a little difficult now because we’re so far apart… It takes four hours, sometimes eight hours to play. I play 36 holes, but…”

It’s worth noting that Doncic referenced their physical distance, as he’s in Slovenia while LeBron is back in the U.S. This helps explain his comments about not being “close.”

The buzz from this conversation has certainly caught the eyes of Lakers fans, who are hopeful that Doncic might sway LeBron into remaining with the team. Perhaps, one day, they might even share a round of golf together again.
