America First Legal Pushes for Citizenship Verification in Voter Registration

America First Legal (AFL), a legal advocacy group aligned with pro-Trump sentiments, is urging the Federal Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to mandate evidence of citizenship for all federal voter registration applicants. This comes after President Trump’s efforts to enforce similar requirements have encountered legal roadblocks.

On Wednesday, the AFL submitted a petition to the EAC, asking the agency to modify its national voter registration form, insisting that applicants provide official documentation verifying U.S. citizenship.

This initiative follows an executive order from President Trump titled “Maintaining and Protecting the integrity of American elections.” The order aimed, among other things, to compel the EAC to implement citizenship proof requirements in the national voter registration process, alongside measures against non-citizen voting.

However, critics have raised concerns about these moves, noting that non-U.S. citizens are already prohibited from voting in federal elections. Many potential voters may still be able to self-attest their citizenship status without providing additional documentation.

Earlier, multiple federal judges blocked parts of Trump’s executive order regarding election integrity, especially regarding the EAC’s push to change the voter registration form, following a lawsuit that questioned Trump’s authority to make such demands.

In AFL’s appeal, the organization contends that the judicial injunction is fundamentally rooted in the separation of powers, despite ongoing legal challenges and the injunction itself.

Daniel Epstein, vice president of America First Legal, explained that the executive order’s intent was to hold the EAC accountable in enforcing laws requiring state election officials to seek evidence of citizenship. “We aim to compel changes to the forms that the EAC puts out and ensure they can enforce it legally,” he stated.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the EAC for comments but has yet to receive any reply.
