The House bill introduced Friday to avert a government shutdown was cut by 1,359 pages after America First Republicans pushed back against House Speaker Mike Johnson's pork-filled original bill.
This reduction in size highlights the failure of Prime Minister Johnson's original plan. That means passing huge spending bills with support from Democrats, bills that lawmakers barely read before asking them to vote.
This miscalculation may be the final nail in the coffin for Johnson's speech.
The original bill proposed Wednesday was 1,547 pages long. Friday's bill is condensed It was compiled into 118 pages and excluded the extreme amounts of pork that Johnson had allowed in the original.
The bill provides funding to the government through March 14 and includes disaster relief and agricultural assistance.
The bill does not include an extension to the debt ceiling that President-elect Donald Trump had requested, leaving Johnson's re-election as chairman on January 3 in a precarious position.
