Maine residents are expressing anger over the state’s plan to spend $13 million to build apartment complexes that could give up to two years of free rent to illegal border crossers.
Dubbed the “Taj Mahal” for illegal aliens, the housing project drew fierce opposition from Brunswick residents at a Feb. 20 City Council meeting. Local residents were angered by the fact that the same apartments that cost nationals between $1,800 and $2,300 per month were being provided for free to illegal immigrants.
“There are so many houses being built. In my eyes, it’s discrimination,” says George Bernier, a resident of Maine. Saidby daily mail. “Am I too white? Is that what it is? Am I working too much? What are the discriminatory factors?”
“How do we provide housing to non-Brunswick residents first?” he asked indignantly.
Fellow resident Lisa Trombley added that the state ignores the needs of taxpayers and favors undocumented immigrants.
“We need to consider the needs of the current population,” Trombley said. “If we don’t have a plan to care for our residents, we shouldn’t invite them in. No matter where they come from, we can’t afford to do that.”
Many of the brand new buildings are Has completed The first facilities in 2023 began accepting residents in December.
The project was initially funded by a $6 million program initiated by the state housing authority, Maine Housing.
