Mayor’s Demands Following ICE Shooting in the Bronx
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called on President Donald Trump to put an end to all ICE enforcement operations in the state, following a shooting incident involving a federal agent that left an undocumented immigrant injured in the Bronx. This tragic event occurred on Thursday and has, understandably, ignited protests and tensions between demonstrators and law enforcement.
During a press conference late Thursday, Mamdani strongly condemned the shooting, mentioning that he had a lengthy conversation with Trump that lasted about two hours after the incident. His appeal for the immediate release of the man shot was not successful, and he reiterated the city’s position that they want ICE agents to leave.
“All they do is terrorize this city,” Mamdani expressed about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Mamdani went on to argue that ICE acts with “impunity” and is responsible for spreading “chaos and terror” across the nation, asserting that the agency has caused more harm than good.
“Today’s shooting is just another confirmation of what we’ve long known,” he added, stating that “ICE is rotten to its core.” He also confirmed that the injured individual had been taken from the hospital by ICE agents.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who also engaged in discussions with Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, expressed her outrage about the event. “Tonight, I spoke with President Trump and DHS Secretary Mullin regarding the shooting in Marble Hill,” she posted on X. She urged the halt of ICE operations in New York and requested the public release of any body camera footage related to the shooting to uncover the truth.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the shooting occurred while ICE agents were attempting to arrest a wanted man from the Dominican Republic around 4 p.m. on Thursday. The agency offered little detail about what provoked the shooting.
DHS stated that ICE officers provided immediate assistance to the victim, who they confirmed is alive and currently recovering in a local hospital. The FBI and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) are involved in the ongoing investigation, with further details to come.
The man shot is reportedly an undocumented immigrant with a past involving a grand larceny conviction, as well as previous arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession, and firearm offenses. Allegedly, he has connections to the Trinitarios gang.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the victim as a 28-year-old male and noted that a 5-year-old boy, believed to be his son, was in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. “Evidence collected indicates that at least one ICE agent fired seven rounds, hitting the driver in the neck, below the left ear,” she elaborated, while stating that fortunately, the boy was unharmed and in the care of a family member.
The individual had been arrested previously by New York City police in December 2023 but was released shortly afterward. DHS criticized the sanctuary policies of New York City as a factor contributing to his release.
In response to the incident, hundreds gathered outside NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, chanting slogans like “ICE off our streets” and “No justice, no peace.” The demonstration saw confrontations between protesters and police, which included some demonstrators throwing water bottles. They expressed solidarity with various causes, chanting, “From Palestine to Mexico, all these walls have got to go.”
During the event, police made several arrests amidst the rising tensions.
