Mayor Criticizes ICE Following Brooklyn Hospital Clashes

On Sunday, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani criticized ICE, labeling the organization as “cruel and inhumane” in light of violent encounters between anti-ICE protesters and law enforcement outside a Brooklyn hospital the previous night.

“They contribute nothing to public safety,” the Mayor remarked during a brief stop on his bike tour of the city, addressing the chaotic scene where protesters blocked an emergency exit and hurled debris into the streets to obstruct traffic.

The confrontations escalated when ICE arrested a man and took him to the hospital for treatment—nine people were subsequently detained amid the turmoil. Confusion peaked as ICE agents attempted to leave the facility with the individual, prompting the police to respond with pepper spray in an effort to disperse the crowd as chaos ensued.

Some nurses accused the NYPD of enabling ICE by allowing their vehicles through crowds, which they argued violates New York City’s “sanctuary city” law. It’s rather eye-opening, especially considering the supposed protections that local policies are meant to uphold.

Witnesses described the situation on social media, with some footage showing protesters jeering at officers while others engaged in scuffles that quickly escalated into brawls. The NYPD stated that officers were deployed for crowd control and maintained they were not collaborating with ICE during the incident.
