Mamdani criticizes Trump's immigration policies during news conference on Manhattan mass shootings

Mamdani Critiques Trump’s Immigration Policy After NYC Shooting

During his first press conference since the tragic shooting in New York City, Democratic candidate Zoran Mamdani voiced his concerns about President Trump’s immigration policy. He indicated he was getting ready for potential customs issues upon returning to the US from an African trip.

Mamdani addressed reporters on Wednesday afternoon, four days after the incident, discussing his journey to his childhood home in Uganda. He mentioned, “I flew commercial economy both ways, prepared for potential customs issues, but there were none.” He added, “It’s a sad reality that the president lives in the United States.”

Mamdani Reflects on the Tragic Events

After returning to New York, Mamdani visited the family of 36-year-old NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who lost his life during the shooting. He had called ahead to ensure it was acceptable to visit. “They welcomed me into their home and wouldn’t let me leave until we’d had breakfast together,” he said, remarking that this gesture was emblematic of love within the community.

During their hour together, Mamdani pointed out that both Islam and another victim, security guard Aland Etienne, were immigrants. “It’s important to note they came here seeking better lives, and their sacrifices allowed their families to thrive,” he expressed.

The Details of the Shooting

The shooting took place on Monday, when a gunman, later identified as Shane Tamra, entered a midtown Manhattan office building and opened fire, killing four individuals. Those killed included officer Didarul Islam, Blackstone executive Wesley Lepatner, security guard Aland Etienne, and Rudin Management associate Julia Hayman. The motivation behind the attack is still unclear, though reports suggest the shooter had grievances against the NFL and expressed concerns about brain injuries related to sports.

Mamdani was actually away for his wedding during the time of the shooting but found his earlier critiques of the NYPD under renewed scrutiny. He had previously called for the re-evaluation of police funding and faced backlash for proposing to disband a specialized NYPD unit which had been linked to riots and other civil disturbances.

Wednesday’s press conference allowed reporters to question him further about these remarks.

Mamdani Responds to Ongoing Criticism

Mamdani was firm when addressing past statements concerning police reimbursement, stating, “Please be very clear. I’m not running to reimburse police.” He acknowledged the significant work done by officers in the city, emphasizing the complexities surrounding these discussions.

Additionally, Mamdani touched on the threats he has faced since announcing his candidacy for mayor. “Sadly, my life has changed. There have been more threats,” he noted, expressing his gratitude for the NYPD’s precautions.
