New York City Mayor Advocates for Abolishing ICE
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani has urged Democrats to openly support the idea of abolishing ICE, a stance he reiterated during an interview over the weekend. He addressed his thoughts on Immigration and Customs Enforcement while discussing ongoing protests at Delaney Hall, an ICE facility in Newark, New Jersey.
Mamdani expressed that the conditions within Delaney Hall further reinforce his desire to see ICE abolished. He stated, “This is part of the reason why I, along with many others, have proposed a vision that ICE should be abolished. Reforms can’t address the brutalities that occur in immigration enforcement throughout the nation.”
He emphasized his pride in the city’s Sanctuary City policies and the executive orders his administration has implemented to ensure compliance with those policies among government agencies.
When asked by MS NOW host Eugene Daniels about the concerns from some Democrats regarding the potential negative impact of the “abolish ICE” rhetoric on the party’s political standing, Mamdani responded thoughtfully. “I think we’ve heard their opinions before, and let’s see where we are. It’s time to develop a new vision for this party—one that stands firmly by its beliefs and principles.”
Further pressed on how left-leaning Democrats like himself could connect with voters across party lines, Mamdani suggested it could be accomplished “by delivering.” He cited forthcoming plans for free childcare for two-year-olds as a tangible demonstration of their commitment to these progressive policies.
This focus on practical solutions contrasts sharply with the reluctance some Democrats feel about embracing strong slogans like “abolish ICE,” given their worries about electoral consequences akin to the backlash faced by the “defund the police” movement.
Mamdani has consistently been critical of ICE’s actions in New York City and has condemned the immigration policies of the previous administration. “We have made it clear that no one is above the law in this city, and everyone must abide by the rule of law,” he stated earlier this year, declaring that he views ICE as a corrupt agency.
In a recent executive order, Mamdani reinforced local law enforcement’s limited cooperation with ICE on immigration issues, requiring a judicial warrant for such interactions.
