Zohran Mamdani Faces Criticism at Pro-Police Event on Staten Island

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is experiencing significant backlash after being booed at a pro-police event in Staten Island. There’s a lot of discussion, especially about his financial plans, including a proposal for free childcare, which comes amid looming city budget deficits.

Recently, Mamdani posted a message of condolence regarding the death of an inmate who was in custody and charged with the murder of an autistic man during an attack. In his post on X, he stated, “A person in City custody died yesterday evening following a court appearance in Queens. Department of Correction staff performed CPR until emergency medical services arrived to take him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. I extend my condolences to his family. In line with standard practice, the DOC and its oversight partners will investigate the circumstances of his death.”

This post did not sit well with many social media users, who criticized him for lacking details about the crime associated with the deceased. The inmate, Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo, was facing serious charges, including murder and manslaughter connected to the 2025 homicide of Ron Marte, a 26-year-old man with special needs, according to reports.

Prosecutors allege that Castillo and another man, Axel Martinez, ambushed Marte in Starlight Park, Bronx, resulting in Martinez shooting him while Castillo robbed him of his cellphone.

Critics have pointed to Mamdani’s post as indicative of him prioritizing suspected criminals over the victims themselves. One social media commentator remarked, “Again! I thought somewhere in the beginning of ‘An Idiot’s Guide to Being Mayor’ here’s a suggestion: ‘Display sympathy for the victims; Not the criminals.’”

A Jewish advocacy group, StopAntisemitism, expressed its outrage, asking, “Didn’t he murder a 26-year-old special needs man?” Another former digital producer associated with the previous administration highlighted Castillo’s charges and questioned whether Mamdani had shown any remorse for the victim.

Amidst these criticisms, one conservative influencer suggested that Mamdani should resign, expressing disbelief at the compassion shown for the inmate instead of the victim.

Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s office for a response regarding the backlash. Notably, this isn’t the first time Mamdani has come under fire; he previously faced criticism after mourning another individual with a lengthy arrest record who died in custody while facing serious charges.

Despite the pushback, Mamdani has voiced strong commitments to reform the jail systems, emphasizing improved safety and living conditions. His administration has instituted several measures aimed at enhancing the jail’s environment, including addressing staff working hours and improving oversight. He has also initiated the transfer of unused facilities from the Department of Correction and opened a specialized housing unit at Bellevue Hospital for inmates needing medical care.

The city is bound by legal commitments to close Rikers Island, aiming to replace it with smaller, borough-based jails, a project Mamdani intends to prioritize. Critics argue, however, that this plan could potentially reduce jail capacity and complicate crime management.
