man arrested on suspicion kidnapping Illinois State Police said he had been arrested 52 times for repeatedly raping a teenage girl in the basement of his home.
The Cook County Prosecutor’s Office said on Dec. 6, 48-year-old Derek Swift drove up to a 15-year-old girl who was walking to her Chicago home.
The girl said the man kept asking her if she wanted a ride in the car until she relented and got into the car. Once she got into the car, she was allegedly pressured to consume alcohol and drugs until she consented, after which she lost consciousness.
She said she woke up naked in the basement of the man’s apartment and was held against her will for about five months while Swift repeatedly sexually assaulted her. She celebrated her 16th birthday during her confinement.
“She is a child who has been traumatized beyond imagination.”
The victim said her captors left her alone for days, left her cell phone behind, and threatened to kill her if she tried to leave and to kill anyone who tried to call her.
She first called police on April 29 after finding the apartment address in the mail.
Assistant State’s Attorney Ann McCord said police rescued the girl and determined the phone was only being used for calls between her and Swift.
when police interrogate The man admitted to picking up the girl, but claimed he believed her to be 20 years old. He also claimed that their sex was consensual.
Mr McCord argued that even if Swift believed the girl’s age, it was not material to the charges he faced. Swift is charged with aggravated kidnapping, kidnapping, criminal sexual assault, and aggravated sexual abuse.
Swift’s attorney asked why the girl didn’t leave the scene, but McCord said the girl tried to run away twice and was allegedly threatened and punched by Swift.

At the bail hearing, police said Swift had been arrested 52 times in his life. Judge Susana Ortiz said he posed a safety risk and ordered him to remain behind bars at the Cook County Jail. The next court hearing is scheduled for May 21st.
