Tragic Subway Incident in Brooklyn Claims Life of Man

A 57-year-old man lost his life in Brooklyn on Monday evening after his shopping bag became stuck in the doors of a subway train, subsequently dragging him onto the tracks.

According to the New York Police Department, Yaw Boahene was discovered “unconscious and unresponsive” on the rails of a northbound A train at the Utica Avenue station in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area shortly after 6 p.m. Following a 911 call, paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death has been initiated.

Boahene was attempting to exit the train when his bag was trapped in the closing doors, as reported by The New York Times. Although such incidents of commuters being caught by subway trains are quite rare, they are still a possibility.

This is not the first occurrence of a tragic event involving subway doors; in October 2022, a young man named Joseph Ancona, just 20 years old, suffered a similar fate at Columbus Circle when his bag got stuck, leading to him being fatally struck by a train. Earlier this year, 37-year-old Marcus Bryant lost his life in Brooklyn after getting caught between a Q train and the platform, ultimately falling onto the tracks.

In another tragic episode back in 2019, a 39-year-old named Vicente Alatorre met a similar fate at Grand Central Station. Initially, authorities thought his clothing or bag had snagged on the train doors, but later they clarified that wasn’t the case.
