Biotech Entrepreneur Donates $29 Million for Immigrant Rent Support
John Wilson, a biotech entrepreneur, has contributed $29 million to assist immigrant families with rent amid a federal crackdown on undocumented individuals in Minnesota.
This intervention comes after a series of deportations carried out during Operation Metro Surge, as reported by the Minnesota Star Tribune.
Some immigrant families reportedly faced financial difficulties as their primary earners were deported, leaving them in challenging situations.
Wilson heads Wilson Wolf Manufacturing, a leader in cell and gene therapy, which is assessed at nearly $1 billion. Earlier this year, he sold close to 20% of his company’s stock for $257 million and established the Wilson Foundation, which has about $80 million in cash reserves.
He estimates that his foundation has provided support for around 20,000 rent payments and continues to donate approximately $1 million weekly, allowing for quicker assistance without the limitations of government programs.
It’s worth mentioning that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) specifically focused on deporting undocumented individuals, including those with serious criminal records, during Operation Minnesota. Officials noted that many of these individuals had previously been free due to the state’s sanctuary policies.
According to reports, Operation Metro Surge also apprehended undocumented individuals with records of drunk driving, drug offenses, robbery, murder, and domestic violence.
The Star Tribune recently highlighted a peculiar response from Minnesota Governor Tim Walz regarding the Trump administration’s deportation of an undocumented child molester he had aimed to protect, questioning whether the notion that “we are not all judged by our worst days” was indeed a step forward.
In March, Minnesota Democratic lawmakers proposed a $40 million emergency rental assistance fund to help prevent evictions, as stated by Fox 9.
Senator Steve Drakowski (R) expressed concern about the bill, noting it could provide over $7,000 to households in Hennepin County, some of which might include undocumented individuals, suggesting that not all might have been apprehended by ICE.
