Prosecutors in Colorado are set to dismiss charges against Solomon Garrigan, a registered sex offender accused of attempting to lure an 11-year-old from Black Forest Hills Elementary School. The 33-year-old’s case is complicated by an evaluation that deemed him unfit to stand trial, prompting the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office to take this step. This decision was highlighted in an official announcement on Friday.
Garrigan was arrested in April 2024 after reportedly trying to take the boy during a break at school, which was captured on surveillance footage. Authorities noted that Garrigan’s status as a registered sex offender came from prior interactions with the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.
According to reports, the evidence against Garrigan is striking, as video showed students running away from him. A child’s reaction to the situation, as shared with a news outlet, indicates a shared sense of fear: “It’s really alarming to think about,” remarked Dante White, a student who witnessed the incident. “Just looking at him, I can’t believe he’d even try something like that.”
After the event, parents demanded a thorough review of safety protocols at Cherry Creek School District, leading to changes, including the removal of Black Forest Hills Elementary’s principal, Amandare Progle. The district acknowledged the need for reforms in response to the troubling incident, stating, “We are making changes now, aiming to improve our practices as we move forward.”
The situation has raised significant concerns about safety in schools, especially following the incident that stirred anxiety among parents and guardians. The district has since implemented enhanced security measures and improved mental health support for students.
