Man Accused of Abusing and Holding Four People Captive in South Carolina
Authorities in South Carolina report that a man, described as “sick,” is accused of unlawfully imprisoning four individuals in the basement of his home. The suspect, 35-year-old Donnie Ray Burchfield Jr., allegedly abused them physically and financially.
The alleged victims include a vulnerable married couple along with two other women, all confined in Burchfield’s Lancaster residence. According to a warrant uncovered by local media, he is accused of beating them and restricting their access to the outside world.
This situation first came to light following the death of one of the victims—a married woman—on July 25. Investigators indicated that she had been dead for around a day, having suffered physical abuse while being denied essential nutrition and medical care.
Upon further investigation, authorities found the husband of the deceased woman and two other women who were also being held against their will.
Burchfield was taken into custody on August 1 and charged with multiple offenses, including vulnerable adult abuse and false imprisonment. Additional fraud and exploitation charges arose from allegations that he misused the couple’s funds.
As investigators await a pathologist’s report, they are considering further charges. A neighbor expressed disbelief over the situation, calling Burchfield “a sick person” for his actions.
Interestingly, while the deceased woman and her husband were considered vulnerable adults under Burchfield’s care, the specifics of their relationship with him remain unclear. Court records suggest that the other women were in romantic relationships with Burchfield, with one having lived with him since September 2024 and the other since 2015.
It appears that the victims had very limited freedom; according to the arrest records, they could only leave the basement when Burchfield permitted them. In addition to physical abuse, he allegedly stole thousands from them, reportedly spending over $2,000 at Walmart using the couple’s credit card since 2021. He also withdrew nearly $12,000 from their bank account to pay off credit card debts.
Furthermore, one of Burchfield’s girlfriends has accused him of threatening her life and suggesting that he knows how to dispose of bodies, hinting at previous experiences.
Currently, Burchfield is being held at the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office with a bond set at $150,000.
