Man in ICE-like Uniform Beaten in Honolulu, Not Affiliated with DHS

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that a man recently caught on video being assaulted in Honolulu while wearing clothing resembling a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) uniform is not connected to the agency.

A video that surfaced online depicts a man in a tactical vest branded with “ICE” being attacked on a street in Waikiki on Saturday night. This incident has caused a stir on social media, particularly amidst rising concerns over assaults targeting ICE personnel and ongoing debates about the use of masks by officers to preserve their anonymity.

The footage shows an individual facing a small group who are throwing liquid at him. Following this, three people tackled him to the ground, punching and kicking him repeatedly. Eventually, he appeared to lose consciousness as one assailant continued hitting him while the others restrained him. Afterward, he managed to get up and stagger away with what seemed to be a bleeding nose.

A spokesperson for DHS clarified via email that despite the vest, “this individual is not an ICE officer and is not affiliated with DHS in any way.”

They emphasized that impersonating a federal immigration official could lead to serious legal consequences, stressing that such actions can jeopardize public safety and erode trust in law enforcement.

Honolulu police have confirmed that a 15-year-old male is now facing charges of attempted assault in connection with this incident. Initially, he was arrested for second-degree assault, but the charge was later downgraded. The police report indicates that the assault took place at 8:12 p.m. on Saturday, with the victim identified as 52 years old. However, neither party’s identity has been disclosed.

A representative from the department mentioned they are unable to share further information as the investigation is still ongoing.

This attack coincided with “No Dictator” protests against the Trump administration that took place earlier that same day, just a few miles from Waikiki in downtown Honolulu. Organizers noted the name change from “No Kings” to “No Dictators” was made to honor Hawaii’s history of leaders.

Despite the individual’s lack of affiliation with ICE, DHS has reported a significant surge in assaults against its officers lately. Earlier this year, an alarming 1,300 percent increase in assaults on ICE personnel was noted, alongside a staggering 3,200 percent rise in vehicular attacks. Additionally, there has been an 8,000 percent increase in death threats directed at ICE agents.

This backdrop of violence against immigration officials underscores the rising tensions surrounding immigration policies and their enforcement.
