Protesters Gather Following Fatal Shooting in D.C.
An unidentified man was shot and killed on Monday, prompting protests in Washington, D.C., against President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard in the city to address rising crime rates.
During a press conference, Trump announced the deployment after a string of notable violent incidents this year. The Metropolitan Police Department reported that officers found the man with multiple gunshot wounds on the 1200 block of NW 12th Avenue around 7:01 PM. Despite efforts by emergency services, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
About half an hour earlier, at around 6:24 PM, large crowds had gathered in DuPont Circle, marching with signs and chanting in protest against Trump’s actions to federalize the city.
Interestingly, a video shared by Bleacher Report’s Melissa Kim at approximately 6:16 PM showed some protesters had already arrived at 14th Avenue NW, which is roughly a 15-minute walk from the shooting site.
A local resident, who heard the shooting, expressed disappointment that such an event happened just before Trump’s announcement. She shared, “I thought it was fireworks at first, but then… well, it quickly became clear it was gunfire. It was pretty scary.” Another resident mentioned she felt a bit shaken after hearing the shots.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Trump discussed the possibility of employing the National Guard to help curb crime in D.C. Just a few days earlier, he had remarked on social media that the nation’s capital could become “one of the most dangerous cities in the world” but could also be turned into one of the safest.
On Saturday, police responded to reports of shootings in the Navy Yard area, resulting in the arrest of a juvenile following a gun incident involving another boy.
This shooting follows earlier incidents, including the fatal shooting of Republican intern Eric Tarpinian-Jachym in June and an attack on two Israeli embassy staff members near the Jewish Museum in May. While some argue that crime in the city has decreased significantly, data shows a more complex picture, with certain violent crimes still troublingly high.
