A man was stabbed Wednesday at an immigrant shelter across the street from New York City’s Central Park, police said.

New York City police responded to the shelter at 31 Central Park North shortly after 11:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a stabbing.

Police said officers arrived and found a 24-year-old man who had been stabbed in the back and abdomen.

The man was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital in stable condition, the New York City Police Department told FOX News Digital.

A person of interest was detained by police. The circumstances that led to the stabbing are unknown.

The incident occurred a day after Mayor Eric Adams announced the city would install metal detectors at the Randall Island immigrant shelter after multiple stabbings at the facility.

Adams also called on the Biden administration to give immigrants work documents and said he wanted to reform New York City’s sanctuary city law, which prevents local law enforcement from cooperating with immigration authorities.

“I don’t believe that people who commit violence and commit crimes in our cities should have the privilege of living in our cities,” Adams said bitterly. “You have no right to harm the vast majority of people who are in our city and follow the rules.”
