Incident Involving Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum
Video footage captured an unsettling moment on Tuesday, showing a man groping Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum during a public meeting before being apprehended by security personnel.
The incident took place as Sheinbaum approached an event near the presidential palace in Mexico City. Social media clips revealed her engaging with supporters, shaking hands, and posing for photographs.
The alleged assailant grabbed Sheinbaum’s chest and attempted to kiss her neck while she was greeting the public. Security intervened promptly, and after the suspect was removed, Sheinbaum appeared composed and even took a photo with him before he was taken into custody.
On Wednesday, Sheinbaum addressed the incident in a speech at a daily press conference. She announced her intentions to file formal charges and requested the Ministry of Women’s Affairs to determine the appropriate legal steps. The president noted that the man seemed to be intoxicated during the incident.
“This should not happen. I say this not only as a president but as a woman,” Sheinbaum emphasized. “Our personal space shouldn’t be invaded by anyone. If it can happen to the president, what about the other women and young girls in this nation?” She added that she has faced harassment since her youth, underlining the need for tougher laws against such offenses.
Citlali Hernández Mora, Mexico’s Minister of Women, criticized the attack on social media. In her post, she condemned the normalization of behavior that violates women’s boundaries.
This incident underscores the broader issue of sexual harassment in Mexico. According to UN Women, about 70% of Mexican women over the age of 15 report experiencing sexual harassment at least once in their lives.
Authorities have confirmed the arrest of the suspect. Since taking office, Sheinbaum has established the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, which works to tackle gender-based violence and promote women’s rights throughout the country.
The incident occurred during what has been characterized as a routine engagement with the public, as Sheinbaum often interacts with supporters in her community.
