Man tries to rob Utah bank with note on stolen paper demanding $20,000

A Utah man was arrested after he handed a note to a bank teller using a stolen notepad and pen, claiming he had a bomb and wanted $20,000.

According to court documents Retrieved by Fox 13 News, West Valley City Police responded to a call about the robbery at the bank on Wednesday, March 19th.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the suspect and arrested him and were identified as 37-year-old Christopher Thomas Kirby.

Detectives say Kirby entered the bank and handed a sticky note to the teller who read, “This is a robbery. There's an explosive bomb. I need $20,000 in my bag.”

Kirby was also seen in security footage where he enters the bank and gives him a threatening note.

Authorities added that “the bank employees interviewed on the ground were hurt by (Kirby's) actions.”

In an interview with police, the outlet reported that Kirby said he had taken the bank because he needed money for food and clothes.

Kirby also admitted to stealing pens and sticky notes used in the robbery from a dollar store next to the bank.

He told the police again, According to KUTV, He chose a bank randomly and didn't specifically target anyone or bank.

Police pointed out that Kirby was in Utah for only 10 days, and told KUTV that he had four interactions with law enforcement related to mental health calls, trespassing and retail theft.

Authorities said Kirby faces an aggravated robbery charge and is being held without bail.

Fox News Digital reached out to the West Valley Police Department but did not receive a response immediately.
