ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos said on “The View” Wednesday that he thinks the mainstream media needs to do a better job of explaining how former President Donald Trump is an unprecedented danger to the United States.
Stephanopoulos made the remarks ahead of a face-to-face interview with President Joe Biden as he seeks to relaunch his faltering campaign after failing to reassure Americans that he was consistent in his own words during last week’s debate with President Trump.
Stephanopoulos’ interview with Biden will not be broadcast live.
Moderator Joy Behar, particularly after the debate, lamented the fact that Trump was trailing Biden in polls in nearly every battleground state.
“I think there are a lot of reasons, but I think the most important thing for people to understand about this election is how far from normal it is. Never before has a former president or presidential candidate been impeached and indicted for trying to overturn the results of an election. Never before has a former president or presidential candidate lied about an election that they lost,” Stephanopoulos said.
“No former president or presidential candidate has ever refused to pledge to accept the results of the next election if they lost. The peaceful transfer of power is the most fundamental tenet of our democracy,” he continued. “I think refusing to accept that is un-American. I think it’s unconstitutional. And I think it’s the media’s job to put that in context.”
Stephanopoulos served as communications director for former President Bill Clinton.
Stephanopoulos’ interview with Biden will not be broadcast live. Instead, portions of the interview will air on “World News Tonight with David Muir” at 6:30 pm ET on Friday, and the full interview will air on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” on Sunday.
For Biden himself, the interview is seen as a turning point for whether he will be able to secure his reelection. Even though the interview will be edited, if Biden’s answers are poor, he may withdraw from the Democratic Party’s candidacy. Since the pressure has been building even before the interview, it may not be a problem at this point whether he answers Stephanopoulos’ questions well.
