A man from Northern California, sporting a beard, has been accused of stealing a young bearded dragon from a pet store. The dragon, measuring about 12 inches, went missing, and the incident occurred earlier this week.
The suspect, dressed in long pants and a Hawaiian shirt, was caught on surveillance cameras just before the reptile vanished from the store on 41st Street in Capitola.
The Capitola Police Department shared, “We see a male appearing to handle the reptile’s cage before it disappeared, and he drove off in an older, light-colored van. He seems to be quite familiar with the area.”
The department urged the public to assist, stating, “Let’s help this little guy get the care he needs! Please share this to spread the word.”
The family-owned pet store, known as Capitola Pet Emporium, claims to offer a variety of pet supplies, including food and grooming services, but now finds itself at the center of this unusual case. The shop is open seven days a week and stocks an assortment of animals from fish to birds and reptiles.
When approached for comment, the store reported that they have not received updates regarding the stolen bearded dragon.
This isn’t the first puzzling episode in the area related to lost animals. Back in 2020, a man from Soquel was paid $1,500 to train a dog but ultimately refused to return it to its owner.
Authorities are encouraging anyone who might recognize the suspect to reach out via email or phone.
