Rep. Greene Asks Trump to Commute Santos’ Sentence

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is calling on President Donald Trump to commute the seven-year prison sentence of former Senator George Santos, labeling the punishment as a “significant injustice” and a sign of “abusive overreach by the judicial system.”

Santos, who previously represented New York, was sentenced to 87 months in prison after pleading guilty to fraud and identity theft in 2024. He began serving his time on July 25th.

The sentence was handed down by US District Judge Joanna Seibert, who also ordered him to pay almost $374,000 in restitution and forfeited over $205,000 in fraudulent gains.

The investigation that led to Santos’ guilty plea uncovered various forms of campaign finance fraud, donor identity theft, and false unemployment claims related to COVID-19.

In a post on X, Greene mentioned that she sent a letter to an amnesty lawyer urging Trump to reduce Santos’ sentence.

“The seven-year sentence for campaign-related crimes is particularly excessive, especially when there are members of Congress who have done far worse and are still free,” she argued in her letter. “George Santos has accepted responsibility and shown remorse. We need to address this injustice and push for equal treatment under the law!”

Greene also communicated with Edward R. Martin Jr., a DOJ lawyer focused on pardons, to emphasize the importance of acknowledging Santos’ past actions.

Greene illustrated her working relationship with Santos, noting his commitment to serving the people of New York. She mentioned conversing with his pastor, who echoed Santos’ remorse and described the sentence as an injustice.

“While his actions warrant some form of punishment, many colleagues of mine have committed crimes far more serious without facing any charges,” Greene indicated. “I believe in accountability, but Santos’ sentence feels disproportionate and unjust.”

Prosecutors revealed that Santos and his campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks, inflated campaign contributions and made misleading reports about a supposed $500,000 loan from Santos, despite him having under $8,000 in his account.

Santos also misappropriated credit card information from donors, including exploiting individuals who were vulnerable, and fraudulently filed for more than $24,000 in unemployment benefits during a period when he was employed.

Elected in 2022 after shifting New York’s third district to the GOP, Santos’ numerous fabrications about his past, including claims of Holocaust and 9/11 experiences, ultimately led to his expulsion from Congress in December 2023 following a damning ethics report.

Despite his legal troubles, Santos remains active in the public eye, selling video messages and engaging on social media.

If not pardoned, Santos is looking at serving time until at least early 2032. Neither Greene nor the White House has provided immediate comments regarding this situation.
