Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has announced that it will lift restrictions on former President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
Mehta announced on Friday that it was immediately lifting the restrictions it had imposed on Trump’s account, saying it decided to do so because it wanted to treat both presidential candidates equally ahead of the 2024 election. report From Axios.
“In assessing our responsibility to permit political expression, we believe the American public should be able to hear from presidential candidates with the same standards,” Meta’s president of international affairs, Nick Clegg, said in a statement.
Trump’s previously banned Meta account was reinstated in January 2023, but the 45th president is still subject to the stricter rules imposed on his Facebook and Instagram profiles.
The social media giant designed these unique rules specifically to restrict public figures’ accounts “during times of social unrest,” Axios reported, noting that Trump is the only public figure Meta has imposed this type of restriction on so far.
“These penalties are a response to extreme and extraordinary circumstances,” Clegg was quoted as saying.
Although Trump has not violated the company’s special rules for his account since returning to Meta’s platform, the company said it was lifting the restrictions nonetheless amid concerns that Trump could take action that would get his account suspended again in the final months before the election.
Axios reports that, given the unique restrictions currently placed on Trump’s accounts, even a “minor infraction” could result in a two-year suspension of his Facebook or Instagram profile.
Once the special restrictions are lifted from Trump’s account, he will be subject to the same general rules that apply to all meta users.
As reported by Breitbart News, on January 7, 2021, Mark Zuckerberg “indefinitely” blacklisted President Trump from his Facebook and Instagram platforms following the events at the U.S. Capitol the previous day.
Around the same time, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter also permanently banned Trump’s account.
These bans prompted Trump to launch his own social media platform, Truth Social, which he has used as his main megaphone ever since.
After a two-year ban, Meta reinstated Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, and the 45th president has resumed posting on his Meta account, though it appears to be far less active than his activity on Truth Social.
